How the Idea for an Intimate Wedding at a Backyard Came About

M. and A. dreamed of a small wedding with just family and their dog. After spending the last few years in Washington they decided to get married here before relocating to Colorado, which they did just weeks after the wedding.

Intimate Backyard Ceremony with a View

The couple rented a big house in Index, WA, a cozy town in the mountains. The ceremony took place in the backyard, right by the river with mountains as the backdrop.

The weather was great. It happened to be the hottest day of the year in Washington—104°F, which is almost unheard of here.

Family flew in from across the country: parents, siblings, and even the groom’s grandma and the bride’s grandpa made the trip.

After the ceremony, we took group pictures. That’s when they let their energetic dog out to join us. She’d been kept inside for the ceremony since she’s so lively. The first thing she did? Ran right up to me, showering me with licks—even my camera got some love! There’s a close-up in the gallery capturing her enthusiasm.

We then moved on to cocktail hour, with the groom’s sister mixing drinks for everyone. After that, we left the guests and went to explore a local forest trail for photos. We finished the day by the river, where they exchanged private vows on rocks in the water.
